About The Margin

A journal for the curious.

We started The Margin for the kind of reading that happens on a slow morning: unhurried, specific and curious about ordinary things.

The premise

Most of life happens in the margins — on the walk to work, at the kitchen table, in the ten minutes before a shop closes. The Margin is an independent online journal about those places and the ideas that live in them.

We publish features, interviews, photo essays, guides and short notes across four sections. The writing is personal without being confessional, and practical without being prescriptive. We hope you finish each story noticing a little more than when you started.

This page and every story on this site are editable sample content for the Vortex template — the publication, writers and interviewees are fictional.

What we cover

  • Culture

Culture at The Margin means the small venues and private rituals as much as the big works — the record shop that refuses to hurry, the library after closing, the printer still setting type by hand.

    5 stories

  • Living

Living is about how we spend our ordinary days: the table set on a Tuesday, the plant cutting on the windowsill, the patience a garden asks for. Practical, generous and never prescriptive.

    5 stories

  • Places

Places collects walks, harbours and the cities that only make sense at walking pace — plus practical guides for travelling lightly and paying attention when you arrive.

    4 stories

  • Ideas

Ideas is where we think out loud — about attention, slowness, unfinished work and the tools we use to find our way. Opinion pieces and guides, written to be argued with.

How we work

Four principles we try to hold ourselves to. Edit them to make them yours.

  1. Specific over general

We would rather write about one kitchen table than the state of home cooking. Small subjects, looked at closely, tend to open onto large ones.

  2. Slow enough to be right

We publish a few stories a week, not a few an hour. Pieces are read aloud before they go out, and corrections are made openly.

  3. Useful where it can be

Alongside essays and interviews we publish practical guides — how to pack, how to look, how to set a table — written by people who actually do those things.

  4. Nothing to sell you

No sponsored posts, no affiliate links and no tracking for advertising. The newsletter is a letter, not a funnel.
